Pillow for side sleepers: what to look for.
A pillow that looks full on the bed can feel quite different once you lie on it. For side sleepers, the useful check is how it fills the space between your head and mattress after your shoulder settles.
Does every side sleeper need a firm pillow?
No. Shoulder space, mattress sink and the way a pillow settles all affect how it feels. Lie down on your own bed and compare the amount of pillow beneath your head.
Start with the space your pillow needs to fill
Your shoulder sits between your head and the bed when you lie on your side. How far it sinks into the mattress changes the space left for the pillow. Two side sleepers can therefore find the same pillow very different, even when they describe their mattress in the same way.
Judge the height under your head once the pillow settles. Notice whether your head feels tipped towards the mattress, pushed away from it, or comfortably settled. A pillow that feels good on one mattress may need another assessment when you change beds.
A short check on your own bed
- Use your normal pillowcase and protector. Check that they fit without pulling the pillow into a tight bundle.
- Gently fluff a natural-fill pillow, then lie on your side in the position you usually use.
- Let your shoulder and the pillow settle before judging the feel.
- Notice whether you relax into that position or keep adding a hand beneath the pillow or pushing fill away.
- If you also sleep on your back, try that position before deciding.
Use these observations to describe the feel you prefer. If pain or numbness persists, seek advice from a qualified health professional.
When Firm is worth considering
