Pillow guide
Soft vs Firm pillow: which feel suits you?
The right pillow is not only about softness. It is about loft, neck position, shoulder space, and the way the fill responds through the night.
Quick answer
Choose Soft if you prefer a lower, more cushioned pillow with gentle sink. Choose Firm if you want fuller loft and a more structured feel. Then check that starting point against your sleep position, shoulder space, mattress sink and the way you like a pillow to respond. The NUVELL Pillow comes in Soft 900g and Firm 1300g; “Firm” describes the fuller option, not a rigid foam feel.
Choose Soft if...
- You like a lower pillow profile.
- You prefer a more cushioned, relaxed hotel feel.
- You sleep on your stomach, change position often or have a smaller frame.
- You want the pillow to compress more easily under your head.
Choose Firm if...
- You like a fuller, higher-loft pillow.
- You want a more structured support feel.
- You sleep on your side, use a firmer mattress or have broader shoulders.
- You want the pillow to hold more shape through the night.
Use four clues, not one rule
Sleep position is useful, but it is only a starting point. Side sleepers often need more height because the shoulder creates space between head and mattress. Back sleepers commonly prefer a middle ground, and stomach sleepers often need less height. Read the dedicated side-sleeper or back-sleeper guide for more detail.
Frame and shoulder width affect how much space a pillow needs to fill. A broader shoulder can make a fuller profile feel natural on the side; a smaller frame may find the same pillow too high.
Mattress feel changes the geometry. A shoulder sinks further into a soft mattress, leaving less space above it. A firm mattress allows less sink and may make a fuller pillow feel more comfortable.
Preferred response is personal. Some people want the pillow to compress and wrap around the head; others want it to hold a defined profile. Comfort cannot be diagnosed from sleep position alone.
How NUVELL Soft and Firm differ
Both options use the same 50 x 70 cm size, 100% cotton 230TC down-proof cover, double chamber construction, outer 30% white duck down and 70% white duck feather, and inner 100% white duck feather. The main difference is fill weight: Soft is 900g and Firm is 1300g.
Because the materials are the same, the comparison is deliberately simple: Soft is lower and more relaxed; Firm is fuller and more lifted. Both remain shapeable natural-fill pillows. The down vs feather guide explains why their response differs from a solid foam pillow.
Start with Soft when...
Your current pillow feels too high, you frequently move between positions, or you prefer to shape and fold a pillow. Soft also makes sense when your mattress allows your shoulder to sink deeply.
Start with Firm when...
Your current pillow collapses too far, you mainly sleep on your side, or you want a visibly fuller bed. Firm may also make sense with broader shoulders or a firmer mattress.
Do a simple fit check
Lie in your usual position on your own mattress. The pillow should feel as though it fills the space naturally, without forcing your chin noticeably toward your chest or letting your head fall toward the mattress. Give a natural-fill pillow time to settle and fluff it before judging the profile. This is general comfort guidance, not medical advice; persistent pain or sleep concerns should be discussed with a qualified health professional.
